A Trace, 2022

A Trace experiments with the digital processes behind the making of black we see on our screens. This work began with one individual JPEG image of ‘black’, which was then deconstructed using Photoshop, highlighting the make-up of individual pixels.

Black is recognised as the opposite of white: owing to the absence of or complete absorption of light. However, when viewed on a screen, by this definition, black isn’t black at all, it is light.

This work questions what it is that we’re looking at if it’s not black, and how can we find space for it’s infinite iterations.

A Trace is a confrontation with our understanding of colour, a self-portrait of human understanding.
